Is Massage Therapy Helpful for Seniors?

By December 13, 2017Massage Therapy

Most Canadian adults under the age of 65 have experienced the benefit of massage, whether for therapy or relaxation, but those in the older set sometimes resist the idea of massage therapy as excessive or indulgent.

The truth is, our more seasoned citizens stand to gain a lot from treatments with their Registered Massage Therapist.

Relief for Aches and Pains

It’s no secret that as we age, we tend to feel more stiff and sore, and have more complaints about general aches and pains.  Massage treatments can help to soothe sore muscles and can alleviate day to day pain and discomfort.

Increased Mobility

Individuals of a certain age tend to report decreased activity.  In general, it simply becomes harder to get around.  Massage can help relax tense muscles and joints, and improve flexibility and mobility.  If your goal is to feel better and get out more often, speak to your RMT about a treatment plan to get you feeling your best!

Relaxation and Improved Sleep

Many seniors complain about sleep disturbances or difficulty with achieving quality rest.  The relaxing environment of massage, along with the simple benefit of touch, are excellent at promoting good sleep hygiene.  Massage therapy helps your body to increase its production of the good sleep hormones, serotonin and melatonin, without medications or supplements. An enjoyable way to contribute to your nightly zzz’s.

Better Circulation

As we age, our lymphatic and blood circulation tends to slow down.  Massage therapy may help to encourage better drainage through the limbs, helping patients feel revitalized and invigorated.

Arthritis Relief

Research shows that even patients with osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis can benefit from the effects of massage.  Treatments can help to alleviate pain and relieve stiffness as well.  Arthritis in any form often goes hand in hand with sore muscles which can be relieved with the skilled techniques of an RMT.  Of course, any chronic illness such as arthritis also brings with it a certain amount of stress and anxiety, and these symptoms as well can be improved through massage.

Social Interaction

Getting out and about contributes to the mental and emotional well-being of people of every age, but is especially important to those whose age demographic makes them a little more prone to isolation.   Combine the healing touch of massage with the social interaction of routine visits for a mental, physical and emotional boost that will be sure to improve quality of life and increased fitness.

As RMT’s, we are aware that each patient’s needs are different, and we are happy to tailor your treatment to suit your unique concerns.  Our goal is to ensure that you enjoy your massage and reap the most benefit possible from your time with us.
